Once a thriving capital and center of government, Córdoba today makes a great stop on the high-speed train on your way to Seville. On the Córdoba Guided Tour you'll explore its Great Mosque, or Mezquita--arguably one of the most fascinating religious buildings in Europe--and the winding streets of the surrounding old Jewish quarter. Córdoba has a long and illustrious past. Its history goes all they way back to Roman times, when "Corduba" was the regional capital. It later became the Islamic capital of Al-Andalus after the Moors invaded in 711, and by the time Abd ar-Rahman III proclaimed himself caliph in 929, breaking with Baghdad, it was the largest city in Western Europe. During the Middle Ages Córdoba was a bastion for scholars and intellectuals as well as an important Jewish center. Today, Roman ruins, the incredible Mezquita, or Great Mosque, and the fascinating Jewish quarter all offer a glimpse into Córdoba's varied past. | | | |
